=============================================================================== SONIC.EXE THE DISASTER 2D REMAKE - Wii port (by PenguinEhis) How to play on a real Wii and on Dolphin (PC) =============================================================================== This is the Wii version of Sonic.exe The Disaster 2D Remake. It plays online with the same servers as the PC version, and it also has an offline practice mode. What is in the game's zip (for example "sonicwii V1.0.zip"): apps/sonicwii/boot.dol the game apps/sonicwii/meta.xml name and description for the Homebrew Channel apps/sonicwii/icon.png icon for the Homebrew Channel apps/sonicwii/gfx/ graphics \ apps/sonicwii/audio/ music > the game needs all of these apps/sonicwii/data/ levels / ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. PLAYING ON A REAL Wii ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You need: - A Wii with the Homebrew Channel installed (a "softmodded" Wii). If you don't have it yet, look up "Wii homebrew guide" (for example wii.hacks.guide). - An SD card (up to 32 GB) OR a USB drive / USB hard drive, formatted as FAT32, with about 250 MB free. Install: 1. Connect the SD card or the USB drive to your PC. 2. Extract the game's zip to the ROOT of the SD card / USB drive (the top level, not inside another folder). When you are done, this file must exist: X:\apps\sonicwii\boot.dol (X: = the SD card or USB drive) If there is already an "apps" folder, just merge them. 3. Put the SD card back in the Wii, or plug the USB drive into the Wii (use the bottom USB port, the one next to the edge, if the Wii is standing up). 4. Open the Homebrew Channel, choose "Sonic.exe The Disaster 2D Remake" and press Load. Keep boot.dol together with the gfx, audio and data folders, in one folder inside "apps" (it may have any name, e.g. apps\sonicwii V1.4). The game uses the files next to the boot.dol you started, so keep only one copy of the game to avoid confusion. USB hard drive notes: - The drive must be FAT32. Many hard drives used with USB Loader GX or WiiFlow are FAT32 already and work. A drive formatted as NTFS or WBFS does NOT work (the game can't read those). - How to check: on the PC, right-click the drive > Properties > "File system" must say FAT32. - A big hard drive can be slow to wake up: the game waits a few seconds for it when it starts. Updating to a new version: Extract the new version's zip over the old files (say "yes" to replace). Your settings and achievements (the "save" folder) are kept. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. PLAYING ON DOLPHIN (PC) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You need a recent Dolphin (dolphin-emu.org, 2022 or newer: older versions have no SD card folder sync). Dolphin pretends to have an SD card; the game files have to be put on it: 1. Open Dolphin and go to Config > Wii > SD Card (in some versions: Options > Configuration > Wii). 2. Turn on "Insert SD Card" and "Enable Folder Sync". 3. Look at "SD Sync Folder" (or click the folder button next to it) to see which folder Dolphin uses as the SD card. The default is: Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Load\WiiSDSync\ 4. Extract the game's zip into THAT folder, so that this file exists: ...\WiiSDSync\apps\sonicwii\boot.dol 5. In Dolphin: File > Open, and choose apps\sonicwii\boot.dol inside that folder. Controls on Dolphin: Set up a controller in Controllers (Dolphin's main window). The easiest is "Emulated Wii Remote" with a Classic Controller extension, or a GameCube controller on port 1, mapped to your keyboard or gamepad. The button list below says what each Wii button does. Saving: Dolphin copies the SD card folder back when you STOP the game normally (Stop button or HOME in the game). If Dolphin crashes or is killed, the latest settings/achievements may not be saved. Online on Dolphin: Dolphin uses your PC's internet connection, no setup needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. PLAYING ONLINE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Real Wii only: the Wii must be connected to the internet (Wii Settings > Internet > Connection Settings, and run the test). 2. In the game's title menu choose "Server" and type the server address, for example: my.server.com or 123.45.67.89:8606 (8606 is the normal port; you can leave it out). 3. Choose "Nickname" and type your name. 4. Choose "Play online". In the lobby press A to say you are ready. When the match starts you are a survivor or the EXE. Press B in the lobby to leave the server. The on-screen keyboard (server, nickname, chat): D-pad / stick move A type the letter B delete Y capital letters (or the Shift key) + OK - cancel The game keeps running while you type in a match, so be careful! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. CONTROLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any of these controllers works. The in-game buttons can be changed in Settings > Button mapping. Action Wii Remote Wii Remote + Classic GameCube (sideways) Nunchuk Controller controller ----------- ------------ ------------- ------------ ------------ Move D-pad Stick Stick / D-pad Stick / D-pad Jump 2 A a A Special 1 B b B Ability A C y Y Chat B (none *) x X Emotion 1 - Z L L Emotion 2 - 1 R R Emotion 3 - 2 ZL / ZR Z Menu / back + + + START Player panel - (hold) - (hold) - (hold) (none) Quit game HOME HOME HOME START on title * With the Nunchuk there is no chat button at first: pick one in Settings > Button mapping. Menus: A = choose, B = back, D-pad or stick to move. Player panel: in a match, hold - to see the players, their rings and the chat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. OFFLINE PRACTICE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title menu > "Offline practice": use Left / Right to pick the character, then A. You play alone in the levels to learn them. Hold - and press L / R (Classic Controller) next / previous level + back to the title menu "Level viewer" lets you look around the levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. SETTINGS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TV screen Auto (uses the Wii's own TV setting), 16:9 or 4:3. Choose 4:3 on an old square TV: you see more of the level above and below, without black bars. Camera look-ahead The camera moves ahead of where you are facing. Backgrounds, Parallax, Effects, Weather, Screen overlays Turn these off if the game runs slowly. Music / Sound Volume from 0 to 10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. PROBLEMS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The game can't start - The game files were not found" The folders gfx, audio and data are not in \apps\sonicwii on the SD card or USB drive. Extract the whole zip again to the root of the SD card / USB drive (on Dolphin: to the SD Sync Folder, see part 2). "The game files don't match this version of the game" Old and new files are mixed. Delete \apps\sonicwii (copy the "save" folder somewhere first if you want to keep it) and extract the zip again. "No SD card or USB drive with the game was found" Put the SD card in, or plug in the USB drive (Dolphin: turn on "Insert SD Card"). A USB drive must be FAT32 (see part 1). The game does not appear in the Homebrew Channel boot.dol must be in a folder inside \apps (for example \apps\sonicwii\boot.dol), on the SD card or the USB drive - not directly in \apps and not two folders deep. Cannot connect to the server Check the server address and port, and the Wii's internet connection (Wii Settings > Internet > run the connection test). Wrong picture shape (stretched / squashed) Settings > TV screen: choose 16:9 or 4:3 to match your TV. No sound on Dolphin Check Dolphin's volume in Config > Audio.
